Case Study -The View Hotel, Eastbourne

In 2015 we were successful in winning the contract to strip out the original mezzanine bar area including the concrete parapet wall and ceiling feature of this eye-catching hotel along Eastbourne’s seafront which is owned by the Transport & General Workers Union.

Throughout the duration of the contract we had both time and noise constraints due to the work we had to carry out on the concrete frame which was extremely noisy! The hotel had lots of meetings and conferences running as well which meant we were limited to early starts, end of day working and lunch hours.

Initially a bird-cage scaffold was erected at high level to facilitate the removal of the sprayed plaster on rib lath ceiling. We achieved this using reciprocation saws and small tools.

Once the ceiling was removed, the bird cage scaffold was lowered to the underside of the mezzanine slab so we then had a safe crash deck to work off whilst removing the concrete wall.

To remove the concrete wall we used a hydrostress concrete cruncher and Hilti TE1000 breaker. These are both designed to reduce hand arm vibration and the concrete cruncher was chosen as it reduced the noise quite substantially. The reinforcement left, once the concrete was gone, was cut away using angle grinders.

Finally we cut out the base of the wall in a precise and efficient manor using a Hilti TS20E track saw – this was a wet cut system. This particular machine was a brand new model and was extremely efficient with the water so we formed a ply lined box lined with thick gauge polythene which followed the saw underneath and captured the water sludge produced during the works.

Once the wall as removed we cleared the site and left it ready for the next trade to carry out their part of the project.

Part of our works at the hotel was to also remove a section of concrete wall above a doorway. We did this by stitch diamond drilling around the edges and breaking up the lump of concrete removed.

The appropriate PPE was worn at all times throughout the duration of the contract.
